On Saturday, Nov. 9, all of our member organizations are warmly invited to participate in sessions devoted to engaging the whole mind and body as a singer. Inspiring sessions will focus on singer mindfulness and preparedness through vocalist-oriented Alexander Technique, International Phonetic Alphabet, and even yoga!

Program Description: How lucky we are to be hosting Programs Day at Balance Arts Center – home to The Alexander Technique Teacher Training Course, approved by the American Society of the Alexander Technique. Expert teacher Alexis Martin will lead us in an "Alexander Technique 101" session, helping us to become further attuned to our bodies, both in general and when in the process of music-making.

About our clinician: Alexis Martin, Alexander Technique (AmSAT), is passionate about helping young singers reach their potential though detailed exploration of mind-body awareness. A graduate of the American Center for the Alexander Technique, Alexis has been invited to teach Alexander Technique at The Oyster Bay Music Festival, The Kaufmann Center, The International Masters Academy of Opera and master classes at Brooklyn College.

Session #2: Basic IPA for Singers

Program Description: What is the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and how can we best use it as a tool for our singers? In this session, diction expert Kathryn Labouff leads us through the basics of IPA, symbols to have in our back pocket during rehearsal, and ways to approach vowels and shapes to find that perfectly balanced sound we seek in our ensembles.

About our clinician: Kathryn LaBouff has coached and prepared more than 300 opera productions. She is on faculty at The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and Dolora Zajick’s Institute for Young Dramatic Voices. Her book, Singing and Communicating in English: A Singer’s Guide to English Diction, was published by Oxford University Press in 2007 is used by conservatories and music schools internationally. She was the English Diction contributor to Diction Coach - G. Schirmer Opera Anthology published by Hal Leonard, 2008.

Session #3: Yoga for Singers

About our clinician: Mark Moliterno, MM, E-RYT500, C-IAYT, YACEP, is an award-winning professional opera singer, voice teacher, yoga teacher/educator, IAYT-certified Yoga Therapist, workshop leader, and author. He is considered a thought-leader in the area of 21st Century vocal training, a master teacher of both singing and classical yoga, and a specialist in helping people understand and connect to their authentic voices. His work combines several traditions of Yoga with Systematic Voice Technique, to develop wellness in the art of vocal communication.
